What it means - Open government, at its core, signifies that residents receive timely, understandable information and have meaningful opportunities for community engagement before critical decisions are made. Conducting public business transparently involves providing clear explanations of costs, alternatives, and expected outcomes.
Why it matters - Building trust hinges on residents being able to see how decisions are made, understand where their tax dollars are allocated, and assess whether projects deliver the promised results. Community engagement is most beneficial at the beginning of the process—not after a decision has already been finalized.
How I will approach this - I will foster public accountability by asking questions publicly, supporting complete and accessible meeting materials, and encouraging earlier notices along with broader community outreach. I will listen with respect, clearly explain my decisions, and work to ensure that residents can easily obtain public records, comprehend major proposals, and hold city leaders accountable.
